Top Law Entrance Exams in India
Students must clear law entrance exams such as CLAT, AILET, AIBE, LSAT, and SLAT to get seats at prestigious law universities in India. Continue reading to know more about the mentioned exams.
1. CLAT (Common Law Admission Test)
The CLAT exam is held once a year. The registrations commenced on July 15, 2024, for this entrance test. The consortium of National Law Universities is responsible for conducting the exams all across the country. There are 24 National Law Universities in India conducting this exam. Private universities are also offering this entrance exam for students. After passing it, students can avail a 5-year integrated LLB course or a 1-year LLM postgraduate course. Students after clearing their 12th board exams with a minimum of 45% marks, can apply for the UG CLAT entrance test. Meanwhile, students with a bachelor’s degree and 50% marks can apply for the PG test.
The exam is conducted manually through writing with pen and paper. The exam is held in around 80 cities in the country. The entrance test is conducted for two hours and there are 150 MCQs. The total marks are 150. The subjects include English including comprehension, current affairs such with general knowledge, quantitative techniques, and legal and logical reasoning. The registration fee is INR 4000 for general and unreserved candidates. Moreover, the fee is INR 3500 for SC/ST candidates.

2. AILET (All India Law Entrance Test)
The All-India Law Entrance Test is commonly known as the AILET. The entrance test was conducted on December 8, 2024. The registrations began as early as August 1, 2024. The registrations for the exam were open till November 2024. The National Law University (NLU), Delhi is responsible for conducting the test. The university offers UG and PG courses in BA LLB (Hons) and LLM. The exams are conducted between 10 am – 11.30 am. With a total of 150 questions, the subjects include English, General Knowledge, Current Affairs, Legal Aptitude, Reasoning, and Mathematics.
Candidates can take the mock papers, and MCQs and refer to the AILET syllabus in order to prepare for the test. They can also check previous year’s questions to get a start. The registration fee for general and OBC candidates is INR 3500, while it is INR 1500 for SC/ST/PWD candidates.
3. AIBE (All India Bar Examination)
The Bar Council of India (BCI) is responsible for conducting the All India Bar Examination (AIBE) every year. The AIBE 19 exam is supposed to be held on December 19, 2024. The exam was initially supposed to be held in November 2024. The registrations for the exam are now closed. The admit card for the examination will be shared by December 15, 2024.
The BCI board will grant students who clear the AIBE exam with a Certificate of Practice. Post this, they will be able to practice law in the country. The exam includes 100 objective-type questions. The syllabus includes Constitutional Law, Administrative Law, IPC, Jurisprudence, and Family law, among others. The registration fee for General/OBC/Gen-PWD/OBC-PWD is INR 3500. Meanwhile, the fee for SC/ST/PWD candidates is INR 2500. The exam duration is three hours and will be conducted both in offline and online modes. There will be multiple-choice questions for all papers.
4. LSAT (Law School Admission Test)
Conducted by the Law School Admission Council (LSAC), the LSAT exams are for undergraduate and postgraduate students. Earlier Pearson VUE was responsible for conducting the exams on behalf of LSAC. But in 2020, the LSAC Global Discover Law was initiated to conduct the exams. The exam is held for 2 hours 20 minutes. Registration for this year’s exam started as early as August 2024. Registration closes by January 2025. The exam will most likely be conducted by the end of January 2025. The dates for the exam are not disclosed yet. The exam is conducted twice every year in January and in May.
The syllabus includes analytical reasoning, logical reasoning, and comprehensive reading. There are 92 questions for the exam. The candidates can choose their preferred slots for the exam as the slots are given on a first come first serve basis. Incase the desired slot is unavailable; the students can go for other slots. The LSAT registration fee is INR 3499 for one time.
5. SLAT (Symbiosis Law Admission Test)
The Symbiosis International University conducts the Symbiosis Law Admission Test. This is also known as the SLAT entrance exam. There are four law schools under this. They are Symbiosis Law School (SLS) Pune, SLS Hyderabad, SLS Nagpur, and SLS Noida. The exam will be conducted on December 13, 2024 (Test 1) and December 15, 2024 (Test 1). The registrations have closed by November 2024. The admit card for Test 1 and Test 2 was released on December 3. The entrance test is offered for courses such as BA LLB (Hons) and BBA LLB (Hons).

There will be a total of 60 questions for the test. The syllabus includes topics such as analytical reasoning, logical reasoning, reading comprehension, and General Knowledge. The exam will be held in online mode (computer-based). The centers will be in 80 cities across the country. Candidates can choose three cities for their preferred centers. Out of this, the first city will be the preferred option. Incase the candidate cannot go for the first, they can opt for the second city.
